History of Chai

Yesterday was International Tea Day! Woop!

So we decided to look into the history of chai - we at Ve Raj love our cup of chai at the end of a long day!

The origins of chai can actually be traced back to ancient times in the Indian subcontinent. The story of chai begins with the discovery of tea leaves in ancient China. Tea was initially consumed for its medicinal properties and gradually spread to other parts of Asia, including India.

In India, tea leaves were traditionally brewed with hot water and sometimes mixed with milk and spices to enhance the flavor. The addition of spices to tea was a result of the Indian palate's preference for bold and aromatic flavors. This practice led to the development of masala chai.

While the exact origins of masala chai are unclear, it is believed to have originated in the region that is now modern-day India and Pakistan. The concoction of tea with spices such as cardamom, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and black pepper provided a unique and flavorful experience.
